Date/time of observation: 8 April 2004
Location of site: Sangkhlaburi, Thailand (Lat 15N, Elev 200m)
Site classification: Exurban
Sky darkness: 5,0 <Limiting magnitude>
Seeing: 9+ <1-10 Seeing Scale (10 best)>
Moon presence: None - moon not in sky
Instrument: 15 inch Obsession f4,5
Magnification: 131 & 244x
Filter(s):
Object(s): M 65, M 66
Category: External galaxy.
Class:
Constellation: Leo
Data: mag 9,3 and 8,9v size 8x2' & 8x4'
Position: RA : DEC :
Description:
M65:
At 131x magnification M65 did clearly show the dark lane along its E side. The
nucleus is stellar but, very faint. It is embedded in a 20x40 core. At 244x I
could spot a very faint star (~14,5mag) only 45 E of the nucleus and right in
the middle of the dark lane, the latter now only visible with AV. At 244x M65
is some 1,5x6 in size. The galaxy is nicely located between a 13,6 and a 12mag
star, the brighter star about 2,5 SW of the centre and the fainter star 2 NE.
Very beautiful.
M66:
At 131x the galaxy looks somewhat irregular in shape. A bright slightly
elongated core (no nucleus) of 1x1,5 is surrounded by a wide halo that
features a dark area E to NE of the core and a spiral arm extension faintly
visible to the SE. The western side (spiral arm) extends like an arc around the
core of M66. Better conditions should reveal a clearer picture of all the
features.
