Location & latitude: La Clapiere Obs. (France, latN44 40 00, longE06 27 36)
Site classification: rural, alt.1650m (5500ft)
Limiting magnitude (visual in UMi): 6.4 with indirect vision 25% of the time
Transparency (1 to 5 - best to worst): 1

=46ilters used: OIII, UHC, Hbeta
Object: Abell 8 (PK 167-00.1, PK 167-0 1, PN G167.0-00.9)
Category: planetary nebula
Constellation: AUR
Object data: Vmag=3D15.7; dim.60"x60" (60"x60" according to IDB); type IIb ;
central star of Vmag=3D19.7; discovered by Abell in 1955; ELCAT: [OIII,
496+501nm] =3D 15 x [Hbeta, 486nm].
RA/DE: 05h06.6m, +39=B008' (2000); Uranometria 65
Description: at 211x with OIII, medium to large PN, extremely faint (at the
limit of vision), vague hazy halo around a faint but wide double star (so
its not dirty optics difracting a bright star's light), homogeneous and
estimated to be about 47" in diameter; both UHC and OIII have a small
contrast gain and Hbeta has no gain at all.
I can provide a scanned drawing of Abell 8 to anyone who can read the
binhex encoding of Eudora (for Mac); just mail me to try
(ypothier@abi.snv.jussieu.fr), it works sometimes with other
configurations...
