Filter(s): None, UHC
Object(s): NGC 2392 (Eskimo Nebula)
Category: Planetary nebula
Class: 3b+3b
Constellation: Gem
Data: mag 9.9 (star 10.47) size 13"
Position: RA 07:29 DEC +20:55
Description:
At low power (80x), the Eskimo or Clown Face was easily swept up
by star hopping from delta Gem ESE about 2o to the pretty triple
star 63 Geminorum, then SE about one full wide-field view (~40').
At both 80x and 170x, n2392 showed immediately as a hazy bluish
disk centered on a faint star, but with only a hint of its famous
mottling. The UHC actually made this worse, washing out any hint
of detail in the bright disk. However, at 170x with UHC the outer
ring or "parka" was apparent to averted vision, stretching out
nearly a minute of arc from the bright center. At 340x, the dark
features in the central disc resolved themselves clearly into the
face, with the E "eye" slightly skewed. Again at 340x, both with
and without UHC, the tenuous outer halo was apparent. At no power
could any hint of the reported OUTERMOST diffuse halo be seen.
